We prepared all floor areas by shot blasting and diamond grinding the edges and low spots.  Areas that were heavily contaminated with oil received a special oil neutralising primer.  We pay an equal amount of attention to single family garage flooring, although we usually don’t see as much oil and chemical contamination.

After the primer had cured we applied Sika 107 epoxy over the entire surface and allowed to cure overnight. The following morning we applied Sika 510 LPL Polyurea at 16 milswith a full broadcast custom Safelite chip blend.  This hard wearing, durable coating is more UV stable and scratch resistant than a conventional epoxy and unlike most polyurea products on the market has a longer open time to allow a seamless installation over larger areas.

After only 3 hours we were able complete the industrial floor coating by applying a final top coat of Sika 510 LPL at 16mils with anti-slip additive.

The resulting floor is smooth, very hard wearing and easily cleaned. The new floor was completed in less than 2 days and the project was completed exactly to Safelite’s requirement, on budget and on time.

Modern Seamless Surface – Covering Ceramic Tile

Our client required a long-term aesthetically pleasing, durable and cleanable surface, in full compliance with Health and Safety requirements for public-use wet areas. We were able to offer and install a custom colored Semco overlay over their existing white tile. This installation is a bespoke polymer modified overlay with great slip resistant qualities even when wet. It is also highly durable and can visually enhance ceramic flooring.

The kitchen at a local hotel had an existing vinyl floor which was 5 years old but was continually failing on the joints.  Once floors begin to fail in these high traffic areas they quickly become a hazard to the staff and negatively reflect the appearance of the establishment.  The requirement was for a heavy duty floor screed that would tolerate a lot of use and meet the demands of their rigorous cleaning standards.

The first step of the process was to remove the existing floor. The equipment we use throughout the process is custom designed to quickly replace the existing flooring. Using flat blade chipping hammers the vinyl was removed. Then the latex was removed by means of rotary diamond grinding and HTC tools. The floor was primed with an epoxy and scattered with aggregate to form a prime coat.  Great care is taken through this process to ensure that the floor will last as long as possible.  There is a huge difference in this process and simply taking out existing flooring and laying down a new vinyl floor.

After the floor was adequately prepared we laid a ¼” polyurea quartz screed with 4” perimeter coving throughout.  This coating has proven to stand up in high traffic, commercial flooring situations. Our coatings are formulated specifically for high impact and abrasion resistance.  Another major upside is the ease with which this flooring is cleaned and maintained.  All works were completed a day ahead of schedule which enabled the hotel to re-open the kitchen and benefit from additional services.

Quartz Carpet flooring is specifically designed to be applied over concrete. Conventional floor coverings simply aren’t suitable forbasement concrete floors. Because concrete is porous, water and moisture can migrate upward from the ground, and work their way through the concrete. This is why resurfacing with carpeting, tile or paint can cause additonal moisture problems.Carpeting gets damp and begins to breed mold and mildew that give off an unpleasant odor. Tiles loosen, crack and pop up as noted in this project and paint and coatings blister and peel. These are all main reasons why you frequently have to replace and reapply these types of concrete floor coverings. Quartz Carpet solves all of these problems because it is engineered to breathe so the moisture doesnt have the same effect.

The major upside of QuartzCarpet that is often overlooked is its aesthetic value.  We have worked with several interior designers in the area that have fallen in love with the look.  Its a popular choice because it not only looks great but will last about as long as your concrete.  The look is achieved through a mixutre of aggregates held together with a clear resin.  Its great for offices, showrooms or even living rooms.  There are plenty of color and design options to choose from.  Quartz Carpet is a great interior flooring solution because it is visually striking and extremely durable.

After inspecting the floor it was clear the original concrete had not been ground to create a suitable surface for the stain or sealer to bond to.

Due to the inevitable disruption to the business, we agreed to rectify the flooring over a typically slow 3 days in their business. The first thing we had to do was to carefully protect all the cabinetry, which could not be removed due to time constraints. Then using HTC heavy duty industrial grinders we ground off the coating and created a profile on the surface of the concrete floor for our overlay to bond to.

Alternative Surfaces met the clients’ needs by applyingthe X-Bond System in a Natural Grain. Because it is specially designed to chemically adhere to any solid surface, this fast drying system allowed us to meet the very strict time lines.  This helped reduce the installation time by 50% and the entire project came in at a remodeling cost of 25% less than its original budget and the client was open for business in 3 days.

With the use of overlays and stains we can transform an ordinary concrete slab into a luxurious old world floor resembling marble or glazed stone with vibrant modern colors that turn floors into works of art.

Alternative Surfaces transformed this heavily damaged concrete slab in an old building in West Linn, to a hard wearing, durable, easy to clean floor for an expanding hair salon in West Linn, OR.  Alternative Surfaces installed the modern commercial flooring for this busy new facility using a hand troweled texture overlay. The first step in the process was shot blasting the concrete in order to prepare it so that it may receive the overlay. Once the surface prep was complete a scratch or bond coat was applied. The following day, any imperfections were removed. With all major imperfections gone, we hand troweled a heavy texture using the X-Bond system – this texture provides more visual interest while helping to maintain slip resistance leaving a leathered and antiques patina to the floor.

On day two, we applied the colors were applied using a low-pressure sprayer. Due to the fact that the floor was highly textured, we sealed the floor with 3 coats of sealer that make highly textured floors such as this, easy to clean. On the third day, a finish coat of clear sealer was applied, putting the final touch on this project.

The end result? A durable, high gloss, scratch resistant floor that will provide years of worry-free service.

Your driveway is your home’s first impression to the neighborhood and an often neglected project on the remodeling list due to the effort and expense of removing and replacing the concrete or asphalt.

Concrete Driveways are likely something you use every day but you don’t notice until there’s a problem. If expansion joints or control joints aren’t constructed properly or if the ground isn’t compacted properly before concrete pouring, the concrete will eventually fail. When a concrete driveway isn’t kept covered and moist while curing, it can dry out and easily crack. Small cracks grow into large ones, especially in cold weather with freeze/thaw cycles.

A most cost-effective way than replacing a driveway is to repair and strengthen by resurfacing concrete flooring.

Some of these overlays are Portland cement-based and modified with high-performance polymers for high bond strength. They can be placed over the surface of existing concrete to produce a new wear layer, as well as tofill in small surface defects such as spalls, gouges, and cracks. We commonly use them to restore existing concrete surfaces, including sidewalks, patios, plazas, courtyards, walkways, driveways, parking garages, pool decks and most vertical concrete surfaces. Once applied these overlays can be broom textured before it sets for a reduced-slip surface.

Non-Slip Flooring Pool Deck Resurfacing

Heavy preparation was the key to success on this job. In order for our overlay to have proper adhesion the multiple layers of epoxy paint had to be completely removed. We shot blasted and diamond ground the surface to leave a flat, contaminant free surface.  A multilayered coating system with liquid polymer provided the protection for the concrete while maintaining the slip resistance necessary for this high traffic and often wet environment.  The sealer we used had an aggressive anti-slip flooring additive and actually has a better co-efficency of friction when wet than when dry.

Alternative Surfaces prepared, restored and sealed this pool deck in 5 days, giving our clients the appearance and durability they strived for but could not achieve with an annual painting. The final outcome was a beautiful, durable

and low maintenance surface for this customer to enjoy for many years.  The project was completed on time and on budget to the extreme satisfaction of the client and pool contractor.
